Zotye T300 SUV Concept Unveiled On The Beijing Auto Show

Zotye T300 SUV Concept Unveiled On The Beijing Auto Show
Zotye had two big surprises on the Beijing Auto Show: 1. the SR8 Porsche Macan clone didn’t show up. 2. this T300 concept car. And the last surprise is a nice one because it shows what Zotye’s designers are capable of if they don’t clone and copy something. The resulting vehicle might be a bit challenging for the eye but at least it is original, it truly doesn’t look like anything else.

Very interesting belt line, floating roof with large usable rails.
The T300 concept previews a new compact crossover SUV that will be launched on the Chinese car market in 2017. Design has not been finalized, but the engine has: a 1.5 turbo with 162hp and 215nm. This is the same engine that is used in many of Zotye’s other small and compact SUV’s, where it normally delivers 150hp and 198nm. They probably boosted the turbo up a bit…

The wheels are really nice. Red Zotye branded brakes and a yellow Zotye branded decoration inside the alloy.

That shoulder line around the C-D pillar is a problem. It is not very pretty and likely not easy to mass produce. The lights are too big, and the rear window too small. Some work needed here!

Pull the boot a bit further out and you got a sedan.

The front is nice. Not beautiful, but daring and even a bit crazy. Love the shape of the grille, and…

… this fine looking badge with the Zotye name in handwriting.

FAW-Toyota Ranz RF-EA1 Concept Debuts On The Beijing Auto Show

FAW-Toyota Ranz RF-EA1 Concept Debuts On The Beijing Auto Show
This is the crazy Ranz RF-EA1 concept car, as it was launched on the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. Design is brilliant, a futuristic four-door coupe shape with a large greenhouse, air ducts in the rear fenders, and an absolute eye catching V-shaped grille with a the Ranz logo in emerald green.
ranz-rf-ea1-bj-2
Ranz is a sub-brand of the FAW-Toyota jont venture focused on making cheap electric cars for the masses. It should not be confused with ‘Leahead‘, which is another similar Chinese Toyota brand. Ranz was founded in 2013 but hasn’t launched a single car on the market yet, and the same goes for LeaHead.
There was no other Ranz on the show, just this concept, which was tucked away in the furthest corner of the Toyota booth, standing on a small platform, doors closed, and without any additional information available. Toyota released nothing about the RF-EA1. The whole car was a surprise. A nice one I must say, but Toyota almost seems ashamed of it. Sub brand don’t need to be bad Toyota, check Venucia!
We assume the RF-EA1 is an electric, and we also assume there is no real motor in it. But none of this has been confirmed or denied by Toyota. I probably could have gotten myself a trailer, roll the RF-EA1 on it, walk away, pulling the trailer through the nearby freight-doors, and go home.
Toyota wouldn’t even have noticed.

Lingyun Goes Two-wheeled At The Beijing Auto Show

Lingyun Goes Two-wheeled At The Beijing Auto Show
This is the Lingyun Two-seater, arguably one of the most crazy and most interesting concept cars on the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. And that is not only because it is electric, not only because it has a beautiful streamlined body, but also by the fact that it has… only two wheels, one up front and one at the rear.

lingyun-two-wheel-china-2

The vehicle is manufactured by a company called Beijing Lingyun Intelligent Technology, and they are absolutely convinced two-wheel electric cars are the future. Some agree. In 2015 the company received an ‘8-digit USD’ Series A funding from several investment funds, including Sequoia Capital China.

The two-wheel technique uses mechanical gyroscopes to maintain balance, steering goes with the front and rear wheel, which can both turn 90 degrees, so the vehicle can turn around its own axle. In corners, the wheels automatically adjust to the angle of the body, eliminating body roll.

The company says their cars are half the weight and half the size of a regular car, and that they have twice the range of a Tesla, and that battery life is 80% longer than on a four-wheel car. The batteries can be detached and recharged at home, without the need for a special charging station or fast charger.

lingyun-two-wheel-china-4

But being half the size apparently also means taking less than half of the number of passengers, because this rather large electric two-wheeler only seats two. The specs as claimed by Lingyun:

Size: 4360/1390/1220, no number for wheelbase, and curb weight is 600 kilo. The electric motor has an output of 60hp. Top speed is 120km/h and range is 400 kilometer. Battery capacity is 25kWh. Electricity consumption is 7 kWh per 100 kilometer. Charge time on 220V is 3 hours.

Linyun says it plans to start mass production in 2019 or 2020. The concept car works, it can be seen driving in green fields on this video. The car come only into view after 3 minutes of commercials, Chinese video websites are going mad lately.

Lingyun also shows a cool one-seater on its website, which they claim uses only 1/3 of the electricity a Tesla needs.

lingyun-two-wheel-china-4a

They had another car on stage, more conventional in comparison. It is an enclosed ‘motorcycle’, using the same mechanical gyroscopes as the two-seater. The gyroscopes keep the body up-right at all times. Steering goes with the rear wheel.

lingyun-two-wheel-china-4b

Body is a beauty again, and it has scissor doors! But only one seat…

Size: 2854/860/1315, and curb weight is 220kg. The electric motor delivers 30hp and is mated to a 3kWh battery. Top speed is 100km/h and range is 100 kilometer. Energy consumption is 3kWh per 100 kilometer. All specs as claimed by Lingyun.

lingyun-two-wheel-china-5

Design wise a beautiful thing, especially that top-mounted rear light.

lingyun-two-wheel-china-6

The bike seems a more realistic proposal than the car, but the car is crazier, and thus better. May they both make it to production!

Zhiche Auto SUV Hits

Zhiche Auto Shows SUV Hits The Beijing Auto Show
Zhiche Auto brought one of their new electric SUV’s to the Beijing Auto Show, so we could have a good look at it. The vehicle, it doesn’t really have a name yet, stood on the stand of design firm IAT, the same company that gave it the Karlmann King. The Ziche, as I will call from now, looked remarkable solid for a concept car, and everything worked.

Dongfeng Motor Corporation is Not interested in NEVS Saab

Dongfeng Motor Corporation is Not interested in NEVS Saab
China’s Dongfeng Motor Corporation has issued an official statement saying it never had any contact with NEVS Saab or with its shareholders concerning a possible take-over or an investment. On August 21 Economic-news magazine China Securities News published an article citing unnamed sources saying such contact had been established earlier this month.
NEVS-Saab is seeing some heavy weather after an unpaid Swedish supplier went to court asking for declare NEVS bankrupt. That hasn’t happened but the company has admitted it is short of cash and production has stalled. Just last week they showed off a Saab 9-3 electric prototype in an effort to find new investors, so far without result and Dongfeng is clearly out of the picture as well. But Dongfeng and Saab are connected anyway, in a way:
In September 2012 Dongfeng Motor Corporation acquired 70% of the Swedish firm  T Engineering AB. This company is a spin-off of Swedish Automobile – Saab Automobile, created during the liquidation process of that firm in early 2012. The company controls the assets of former Saab Powertrain, involved in R&D into ICE, power train, chassis control systems, hybrid power trains, and electric power trains. Dongfeng thus has the best stuff already.
